CEFR Alignment & Score Comparison
ITEP EXAM International assessments are fully aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the globally accepted standard for describing language ability.
What is the CEFR?
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) was established by the Council of Europe and is an international guideline used to describe achievements in foreign languages. It is used by educational institutions, employers, and governments across the world to assess and communicate language proficiency.
The CEFR organizes language proficiency into 6 levels derived from 3 categories:
CEFR Level Descriptions
Beginner
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Can introduce themselves and ask/answer personal questions.
Elementary
Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (shopping, local geography, employment).
Intermediate
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling.
Upper-Intermediate
Can understand the main ideas of complex text. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible.
Advanced
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without obvious searching for expressions.
Proficient
Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different sources, reconstructing arguments in a coherent presentation.
